While both NTFS and share permissions can be applied to volumes and folders, only NTFS permissions can be applied to individual files. Only when a network is used to access the resource are share permissions effective. Whether someone accesses the resource locally or over a network, NTFS permissions are still effective. NTFS permissions are inherited from a parent folder. There is no inheritance for share permissions.
