Setting a WAP to transmit at maximum power may allow Wi-Fi to extend into regions where you don't want it to. Because it picks up signals from neighbouring Wi-Fi networks, it can also produce more interference, resulting in poor performance and stability. The signal strength is unaffected by enabling or removing the SSID broadcast. It may take some experimenting with settings, antennae, and location to get the Wi-Fi transmission just right, but in this case, decreasing the WAP's power setting is a good point to start.
