Question:
There are four main types of fire extinguishers, one for each type of flammable substance.
A for wood and paper fires.
B for flammable liquids.
C for electrical fires.
D (metal powder or NaCl [salt]) for flammable metals like phosphorus and sodium.
The multipurpose, or ABC-rated, extinguisher is currently the most common type of fire extinguisher. It has a dry chemical powder that cools and smothers the fire simultaneously. Make sure the fire extinguisher will work for Class C fires before using it to put out electrical fires, which may be caused by a shorted-out wire in a power supply.
