When servicing electronic components, static-shielding bags are crucial to have on hand because they protect the sensitive electronic components from stray static charges. The pink antistatic bags, in contrast, simply prevent static buildup present in other plastic bags and do not provide ESD protection. By design, the static charges collect on the outside of these silver or pink bags instead of on the electronic components. Antistatic mats "drain" the charges away, whereas antistatic bags do not, hence, an antistatic bag should never be used in place of an antistatic mat. An antistatic bag should never be used to hold components. Bags are made to be portable, whereas mats are made to be stationary on a bench.
