You are working on your laptop at your company. When you enter www.google.com into your laptop's browser and hit Enter, you cannot access the site as usual. After that  you open your phone's browser, and can easily access Google using your cellular connection. Your laptop detects internal servers and can print without issue. The Domain Name System (DNS) server is in charge of translating hostnames such as www.google.com to IP addresses in order to facilitate communication. You won't be able to browse the Internet using friendly website names if it isn't running properly or you can't connect to it. IP addresses are assigned to network clients using the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). The subnet mask could be wrong, but it would not be missing, and a duplicate IP address would result in an error message.
